What Is Christian Coaching, Exactly?

It's not counseling. It's not mentoring. Here's how it works and who it's for.

Center for Christian Coaching

Christian coaching is a forward-focused, Spirit-led conversation between a trained coach and someone who wants to move from where they are to where God is calling them to be.

A coach doesn't tell you what to do. They ask powerful questions, listen deeply, and create the kind of space where you can hear yourself think, and hear from the Holy Spirit. The result isn't advice. It's clarity, action, and momentum.

How Is Coaching Different From Counseling or Mentoring?

These three things can look similar from the outside, but they serve very different purposes.

Counseling

Counseling is for people navigating significant emotional, psychological, or relational pain. Counselors are licensed professionals trained to help people heal from the past.

Mentoring

Mentoring is a relationship where a more experienced person pours wisdom, guidance, and experience into someone less experienced. The mentor leads. The mentee follows.

Coaching

Coaching is different from both. A coach isn't there to heal or to direct. They're there to help you think. The assumption in coaching is that you already have what you need inside you, and the coach's job is to help you access it. Coaching is focused on the present and the future, not the past. It's about action, not analysis.

The Biblical Foundation

Scripture is full of examples of people helping others discern what God is calling them to do. Jethro came alongside Moses and helped him see a better way to lead. Barnabas walked with Paul and invested in his calling. Proverbs 20:5 says, "The purposes of a person's heart are like deep water, but one who has insight draws them out."

That's coaching. Drawing out what God has already placed inside someone, and helping them take the next step toward it.
